I used multiple daily injections for 17 years before I started to think about getting pregnant. My doctor told me I needed to get to lower levels of A1c and achieve glycaemic stability to have a pregnancy free of complications, so he offered me an insulin pump. With MDI, my HbA1c was 8.3% but with pump therapy it dropped to 6.4%. Shortly after, I found out I was pregnant. I often joke that our child is the son of my pump. I am very thankful.

When I first decided to start a family my nurse and doctor emphasized the importance of having excellent blood glucose control both before and during the pregnancy, and recommended switching from MDI to an insulin pump. After I did this, my HbA1c dropped to below 6.0, I had no major blood glucose fluctuations during my pregnancy, and the birth itself went great. Using my pump definitely helped me to have a healthy child and now we are such a happy family.
Two years ago, we decided that we would like to have a baby. Unfortunately, my blood glucose levels were not good enough at that time, which was a huge disappointment. Then, my doctor recommended insulin pump therapy to help me achieve the necessary HbA1c. Well, after just a short time with the pump my values were so good he said I could start trying for my baby. And very soon after that, I was pregnant! I think of my insulin pump as a little miracle. But of course, the real miracle is my beautiful, healthy son.
